Passage 1

African Elephant

               The African elephant is the largest land animal in the world.  It measures 4 metres tall and weighs up to 6 tons.  It is strictly a herbivore.  It has two main enemies-the farmer and the poacher.  Poaschers hunt the African elephants for their expensive tusks.  The African elephants often encroach into farmlands in search of food.  Farmers kill the adult elephants when efforts to drive them away fail.  Baby elephants,  on the other hand,  and captured and sent to zoos and circuses.

               ช้างแอฟริกาเป็นสัตว์บกที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก  มันสูง 4 เมตร หนักถึง 6 ตัน  และเป็นสัตว์กินพืชเป็นอาหารเพียงอย่างเดียว  ช้างมีศัตรูหลักๆ อยู่ 2 อย่าง คือ ชาวสวนและนายพราน  นายพรานล่าช้างแอฟริกาเพื่อเอางาที่มีราคาแพง  ช้างแอฟริกามันลุกล้ำพื้นที่สวนเพื่อเข้าไปหาอาหาร  ชาวสวนจึงฆ่าช้างโตเต็มวัย (Adult Elephant) เมื่อไม่สามารถขับไล่ช้าง  แต่สำหรับลูกช้างก็จะถูกจับและส่งตัวให้กับสวนสัตว์และคณะละครสัตว์

               The idea of “law” exists in every culture. All societies have some kind of law to keep order and control the interactions of people with those around them. The laws of any culture tell people three things: what they can do (their rights), what they must do (their duties), and what they may do (illegal actions). In addition, there are usually specific types of punishment for those who break the law

               แนวคิดในเรื่อง“กฎ” มีปรากฏอยู่ในทุกๆวัฒนธรรม สังคมทั้งหลายจะต้องมีกฎบางอย่างเพื่อจัดระเบียบและควบคุมการมีปฏิกิริยาต่อกันของผู้คน กฎของแต่ละวัฒนธรรมจะบอกกับผู้คนอยู่ 3 สิ่ง คือ อะไรคือสิ่งที่พวกเขาสามารถทำได้ (สิทธิของพวกเขา), อะไรคือสิ่งที่พวกเขาต้องทำ (หน้าที่ของ       พวกเขา), และอะไรคือสิ่งที่พวกเขาอาจจะไม่ทำ (การกระทำที่ผิดกฎหมาย) นอกจากนั้นตามปกติแล้วยังมีรูปแบบเฉพาะของงการลงโทษสำหรับผู้ที่ละเมิดกฎอีกด้วย
